KNITTED FLOWER BROOCH
BROOCHES – MEANING – HISTORY
Brooch meaning
A Brooch is an ornament with a clasp that is pinned to your clothes. The name of the Brooch, like many other exquisite and outstanding delicate objects, originates from the French language – “Broche” therefore means ‘Brooch’ or ‘Pin’.
Brooch History.
Brooch History:
According to the Encyclopaedia of Fashion and Clothing, the Brooch first appeared in the 17th Century. Many say that Madame De Sevigne was the First Lady to initiate wearing this style of jewellery. At that time, the Brooch was distinguished by it’s rich; expensive and wealthy design, and place of attachment. With a brooch, it was possible to not only to fasten the collar or cover the neckline of a garment, but it was also used to emphasise the neckline and bare neck of modern clothing.
By the 18th Century, Brooches were mostly covered with Diamonds. Brooches in the form of Bouquets, Ribbons and Woven Branches later came into fashion. In the second half of the 18th Century, simpler forms of the Brooch began to appear as round and oval shaped designs, with small portraits placed within the Gold Frames and Pearl Borders, which became a popular style eventually.
In the first half of the 19th Century, Brooches were decorated with Filigree, Grain and Precious Stones. In the time of the Second Rococo, Brooches were made of a pressed Gold Leaf material, or with Coloured Enamel or Gemstones.
By the 60s, Diamonds were used in Brooches, with a Platinum Openwork Frame. This later transcended to the use of Wood, Leather and other plastic materials, which were added to the manufacturing process of Brooches.
To conclude, whether they are a rising trend or disappearing into the background of fashion trends in our modern times, Brooches as a staple piece, have survived many centuries until this day and continue to thrive as a unique fashion accessory.
